Sid Meier’s Pirates!

Release Date: 2004
Platforms: PC, Xbox, Playstation, Mac OS
Genres: RPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Adventure, Third-Person, Ships, Atmospheric, Good Story, Ships
More about the game: Read More
When it comes to Sid Meier’s Pirates!, we’re talking about an absolute legend of a pirate game. In fact, you could easily call it the gold standard for the genre. The game is basically a pirate life sim where you step into the role of a daring captain roaming the seas for adventure and treasure. The game gives you almost complete freedom. You can do whatever you want: hunt down merchant ships, search for buried treasure on lost islands, dance with governors’ daughters, or even marry one of them.
Basically, the gameplay is all about you creating your own story. No one’s forcing you down a plot, no rigid restrictions. You’re constantly making decisions that affect your reputation, your wealth, and of course, your relationships with the different factions: the English, Spanish, French, and Dutch. By the way, the game has an insane amount of mini-games. There’s fencing, dancing, and even sneaking into cities. All of this just breaks up the main gameplay loop and keeps things fresh. The naval battles, by the way, are surprisingly fun, as are the boarding fights.
Honestly, the only real downside to this game is its age. It came out in 2004, and the graphics are definitely dated. But let’s be real, that doesn’t hurt the immersion at all. This game is seriously addictive.
Sea Dogs

Release Date: 2000
Platforms: PC
Genres: RPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Historical, Sword Fighting, Third-Person, Ships
More about the game: Read More
“Korsary” or “Sea Dogs” for the western audience – this is foundational. This is the game that, for many of us, kicked off our pirate adventures on PC. You take command of Captain Nicholas Sharp and you’re free to do whatever you want. Want to trade? Do it. Want to run quests? Go for it. Want to just sail the Caribbean with the salt wind at your back? The world is yours. The graphics look ancient today, of course, but the atmosphere is still there. This is a true, almost simulation-level dive into the life of a 17th-century privateer.
Boarding actions – that’s where the real fun is.
As for the sword fighting, it feels a little stiff, but it gets the job done. The main thing isn’t to swing your blade like a maniac but to nail the timing and block attacks. The whole game is basically about that – patience and calculation. At sea, you wait hours for a favorable wind; in a fight, you wait for the perfect moment to strike. And there’s a unique kind of charm in that.
Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)

Release Date: 2003
Platforms: PC, Xbox
Genres: RPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Historical, Sword Fighting, Third-Person, Ships
More about the game: Read More
Pirates of the Caribbean – isn’t this the game that was basically an add-on for “Sea Dogs”? I was always sure it was an original title and only found out recently that wasn’t the case. Oh well, it doesn’t matter. It basically gives us all the same stuff, only bigger and better. The main character here is Captain Nathaniel Hawk, an Englishman who fate throws into a whirlwind of naval intrigue.
By the way, it’s important to get this: this game isn’t just about ships and cannons, it’s a full-blown RPG where you take on the role of an agent for the local governor. And that means sword duels, boarding actions, treasure hunting, and exploring caves. And there are ghosts and other supernatural stuff, which basically links the game to the movie. Boarding is a whole other level of awesome, when you burst onto the deck of an enemy ship and start a duel, first with one pirate, then another, or just a one-man-army battle against everyone.
There’s no Jack Sparrow here, but that’s probably for the best.
Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales

Release Date: 2006
Platforms: PC
Genres: RPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Ships, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Historical, Sword Fighting, Third-Person
More about the game: Read More
By the way, this is one of those games where you can feel like a real captain, and not just one sailing the seas, but one with total freedom. You can be in service to a faction or a freelance pirate. It all depends on your choices and, basically, what you decide to do. The core gameplay, of course, revolves around naval battles and trading, but that’s far from everything. There are also third-person boarding actions. And, to be honest, they’re not the best part of the game. The sword combat is clunky and uninspired, but that’s not the main point. The real hook is the world map, where all the action unfolds. Constant skirmishes, raids on convoys, completing quests – that’s what’s waiting for you.
Essentially, it’s a standard RPG sandbox. You’ll be leveling up skills, finding new gear for your character, and most importantly, buying new ships that will eventually become your main source of power. The game has everything a fan of the pirate theme could want. Naval battles, island exploration, treasure hunting. For the most part, this is the exact simulator many people have dreamed of.
In short, an excellent project that lets you feel like a real captain.
Sea Dogs: To Each His Own

Release Date: 2012
Platforms: PC
Genres: RPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Ships, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Historical, Sword Fighting, Third-Person
More about the game: Read More
When this game first came out, I couldn’t believe it. Weird title, zero marketing. In reality, this is probably the best pirate simulator that exists on PC. You take on the role of a young guy named Charles de Mor – a true adventurer, so to speak. He arrives in the Caribbean to find his brother. What kind of game is this? To be honest, it’s a classic open-world RPG. The game doesn’t try to hold your hand. You have to think for yourself, navigate using a map that isn’t like your typical minimap. You can sail the seas and explore cities. Engage in trade, take on quests. Hunt corsairs or become the terror of the seas yourself.
The main story is just fire. There’s intrigue, secrets, betrayal. The characters are so well-developed you immediately believe they’re real. But the gameplay, at first, can feel clunky. Especially the sword fighting. But once you level up a bit and get used to the controls, you start getting a real kick out of every duel. Naval battles are a whole other story. You feel like you’re commanding a real ship. You feel every gust of wind, every cannonball impact. The wind isn’t just for show here; it actually affects the course of battle. In short, this title is a real gem for fans of Caribbean romance.
Vendetta – Curse of Raven’s Cry

Release Date: 2015
Platforms: PC, macOS
Genres: Action-Adventure, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Ships, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Historical, Sword Fighting, Third-Person
More about the game: Read More
Vendetta – Curse of Raven’s Cry. This was supposed to be THE pirate game everyone was waiting for. But unfortunately, it never took off. The story follows a hardened captain seeking revenge and causing chaos throughout the Caribbean. The entire gameplay loop is based on exploring the open world. And of course, on bloody boarding actions and cutlass-fueled carnage.
You won’t find the cartoony romance of Sea of Thieves here. Everything is serious, grim, and bloody. You’ve got a whole arsenal at your disposal. From cutlasses and pistols to harpoons. The boarding actions are a special kind of thrill.
On release, this game was a buggy nightmare. Seriously, it was a mess, almost unplayable. The new version beefed up the graphics, fixed the bugs, and polished the combat. It became playable, but you can’t erase that first impression. Vendetta is the game that could have been a hit. But in the end, it was just a solid B-lister.
Risen 2: Dark Waters

Release Date: 2012
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Genres: RPG, Action, Open World, Third-Person, Pirates, Adventure, Fantasy, Atmospheric, Magic, Natives, Treasure, Good Story
More about the game: Read More
Risen 2: Dark Waters is a real gift for anyone who loves RPGs and the pirate theme. The plot drops us into a world where the gods have stopped helping humanity. The protagonist is no longer a young adventurer, he’s retired, but fate had other plans and threw him into the thick of things. He ends up being sent to the local pirates to find out how to defeat the sea monster titans because they’re making it impossible to sail the seas or live peacefully on the mainland.
The gameplay is a classic RPG – leveling up, learning new skills, and gathering resources and gear. Of course, there’s a huge open world to explore. Quests, NPCs, and loot – the standard kit for the genre. The main feature of the game is the combat. It’s not a slasher, but you can fight both in melee and with various muskets that have blades on the end of the barrel. The combat is essentially simple.
The graphics are admittedly not the best. But the atmosphere here is absolutely killer, because the creators of the Gothic series know how to make interesting games. The game has humor and interesting characters. For fans of the series and RPG lovers, Risen 2: Dark Waters will definitely be a hit. It’s a solid project worth checking out.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Release Date: 2013
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Wii U
Genres: Action, Open World, Pirates, Adventure, Third-Person, Atmospheric, Good Story, Stealth, Naval Combat, Ships, Assassins
More about the game: Read More
So what is this game? Simply put, it’s the pirate game that everyone always wanted. Ubisoft did what no one expected: they took the Assassin’s Creed concept and basically bolted on an awesome pirate setting. The action takes place in 1715, and we play as the young and cocky pirate Edward Kenway. He’s hungry for fame and fortune. His ambitions lead him to meet legendary corsairs – like Blackbeard, for example.
The gameplay is a massive sandbox with a seamless world. You can just be sailing the sea and stumble upon a whale or some abandoned island. Or you can attack a Spanish galleon and blow it to smithereens. The naval battles here are very realistic, controlling the ship is intuitive, and firing cannons or mortars is super satisfying.
Of course, this isn’t just a pirate game, it’s also an Assassin’s Creed game. So stealth and parkour are still around, but honestly, that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that the game gives you a feeling of freedom. It’s perfect for getting lost in all weekend. Sucks you in for hours on end.
Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Release Date: 2014
Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Genres: Action, Adventure, Open World, Assassins, Stealth, Third-Person, Historical, Pirates, Atmospheric, Good Story
More about the game: Read More
The sequel to the legendary Black Flag. In short, it’s the same pirate game but basically in a new wrapper. We play as Shay Patrick Cormac. He’s a former Assassin who betrays the Brotherhood. The whole story is built on betrayal and revenge. Besides that, a lot of sea adventures await us. We get to take control of a ship and sail the expanses of the North Atlantic.
The gameplay is almost the same as in Black Flag. The developers did add a couple of new tricks, of course. Like burning oil or a new arsenal of weapons. But overall, it’s the same familiar gameplay. The frantic brawls on deck are their own art form. The naval battles are still just as awesome.
By the way, we also have to clear outposts here. But in Rogue, this takes on a special meaning. Because now we’re hunting those who were once our brothers. The story here is really strong. Fans of the series and history buffs will definitely dig it. An excellent project.
Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry

Release Date: 2013
Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
Genres: Action, Adventure, Assassins, Pirates, Open World, Stealth, Third-Person, Historical, Atmospheric, Deep Story, Ships, Seafaring, Sword Fighting
More about the game: Read More
Freedom Cry is a DLC for Black Flag. Adewale is a former slave who became an assassin. The player takes on the role of this character. The main goal of the game is to fight against slave traders and rescue enslaved people. The setting is the same Caribbean, but with a much darker atmosphere.
As for the gameplay, it’s still the same Black Flag. Parkour, stealth, and naval battles. The developers added a couple of new features – for example, we now have a machete at our disposal. But basically, it’s just polished old mechanics.
Of course, the gameplay isn’t the main thing here, the story is. Adewale’s story is very powerful and dramatic. It’s a real gift for fans of the series. Especially for those who want to learn more about the game’s universe. This game is strictly for fans. If you don’t like Black Flag, you won’t like this either.

With Fire and Sword 2: Caribbean! What do we have here? This is basically Mount & Blade but with pirates. The developers took a brilliant idea as their foundation. The gameplay is built on complete freedom of action. You have to choose your own path in this world. You can become a merchant or go serve one of the major powers. Or you can just say screw it all and become a real pirate.
The main feature of the game is the large-scale battles. Not just at sea, but on land too. Naval battles are pure, high-octane action. You can board an enemy vessel and then add it to your fleet. And on land, brutal slaughter awaits you. Hundreds of warriors clash on the battlefield.
By the way, this isn’t just a game about pirates. It’s also an RPG. So there’s progression and all the other elements of the genre. But overall, this is that pirate sandbox. A solid project worth trying out.

Genres: Action, Pirates, Naval Combat, Adventure, Atmospheric, Good Story, Sword Fighting, Third-Person, Ships
More about the game: Read More
Tortuga: Two Treasures is a classic action game about pirates. Here we play as Aurelius, a former slave who later becomes one of the most dangerous pirates in the Caribbean. Basically, the plot here is pretty straightforward. We have to explore islands, plunder ships, and participate in deadly boarding actions.
The entire gameplay boils down to combat, both at sea and on land. The naval battles are surprisingly well-done, and the sword fighting duels are absolutely awesome. There’s no room for the weak here; as they say, only the most ruthless survive.
By the way, although the plot is linear, it’s very action-packed. Lots of different cutscenes and well-developed characters. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy it. It’s a solid project worth trying out.
Swashbucklers: Blue vs Grey

Release Date: 2007
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 2
Genres: Action, Pirates, Naval Combat, Adventure, Atmospheric, Sword Fighting, Third-Person, Ships
More about the game: Read More
So, what kind of game is this? Swashbucklers: Blue vs Grey is basically an action game that uses historical events as a foundation but gives us a completely fictional story. We play as Abraham “Nightingale” Gray, a freelance captain who gets dragged into a story of espionage and blockades. We have to decide who we’re going to play for, the Confederates or the Union.
The entire gameplay is a third-person action-adventure. Naval battles are pure, high-octane action. You can sink enemy ships and board them. Sword fights also look very cool. The combat is essentially simple but quite engaging.
On top of all that, the game has a very good story. There are even elements of espionage and mystery, which, let’s be honest, you don’t often see in pirate games. This project is strictly for a niche audience. If you were looking for something unusual, grab it. It’s a solid project worth trying out.
Buccaneer: The Pursuit of Infamy

Release Date: 2008
Platforms: PC
Genres: Action, Pirates, Arcade, Open World, Naval Combat, Atmospheric, Ships, Multiplayer
More about the game: Read More
Buccaneer: The Pursuit of Infamy is an arcade action game about pirates. Simply put, it’s not a hardcore simulator, but a fast and flashy game. We play as a captain who has gone through, so to speak, a trial by fire. And now he’s a true legend of the Caribbean Sea.
The entire gameplay is built on action. There’s no room for trading or complex economics. Just cannons, sails, and the sound of explosions. The game has both a single-player campaign and a multiplayer component. In single-player, we have about 50 short and dynamic missions. And online is just pure chaos. Shoot, tear apart, and sink other pirates. It’s the real deal.
By the way, the controls here are very simple. Mouse and WASD, and you’re in the game. No extra baggage. This project will keep you hooked for hours, especially if you love arcade games. Definitely a must-have.
Black Buccaneer

Release Date: 2006
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation 3
Genres: Action, Pirates, Adventure, Atmospheric, Magic, Third-Person, Treasure, Sword Fighting
More about the game: Read More
Black Buccaneer is an action game about pirates that is basically an old-school title. The story takes us to a mysterious island. We play as an adventurer, Francis Blade, who finds himself the sole survivor after a shipwreck. We have to fight the undead and a powerful sorceress. The main feature of the game is a mysterious amulet. It gives you the ability to transform into the Black Buccaneer.
The entire gameplay is based on dynamic action and exploration. You can use voodoo magic and the abilities of the Black Buccaneer, which allows you to challenge an entire army of the undead. Of course, we’ll need to search for treasure and solve various puzzles.
All in all, this game is okay for a one-time playthrough. The atmosphere is definitely top-notch. But the combat, let’s be honest, is clunky. Pass on this and don’t look back.

Platforms: PC
Genres: Action, Adventure, Pirates, Atmospheric, Good Story, First-Person
More about the game: Read More
RedJack: The Revenge of the Brethren is a classic pirate action game that, to be honest, won’t surprise anyone at all. The story begins on Lizard Point island. There, Nicholas Dove was born, who was later destined to become a real pirate, although at first, he didn’t want to.
The plot takes us to a world where there is magic and mysticism. The most incredible adventures await our hero. He will have to escape from prison and find chests of gold. We will need to solve the mystery of Red Jack’s betrayal. Of course, the game is quite old and the visuals are terrible now. The graphics are severely outdated, and it’s really noticeable.
By the way, the game is in first-person, which allows for, so to speak, complete immersion in the atmosphere of pirate adventures. It’s a solid project, worth a try.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is a classic third-person action game that transports us into the world of the famous movie franchise. The game’s plot is closely tied to the film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” and the most interesting part is that you can play as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, or Elizabeth Swann.
Each of these characters has their own unique skills and combo moves that can be upgraded as you progress. For example, Jack Sparrow can set his sword on fire, and Will Turner skillfully throws knives. The combat here is very flashy – lots of different acrobatic combos and strikes.
By the way, the game even has team-up attacks that add dynamism to the fights. But, to be honest, this game is strictly for fans. If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll like it, but if not, it’s a C-tier game at best.

The entire gameplay is built around fighting. The combat here is quite dynamic and engaging – lots of combos, sword duels, and acrobatics. Each character has their own fighting style, which, frankly, adds variety to the gameplay.
All in all, this project is strictly for fans. If you’re a fan of the movies, you’ll definitely like it. The direction and cutscenes are in the spirit of a Hollywood blockbuster. A great game to get lost in for a whole weekend.

Buildings crumble, and enemies fly in all directions. There are about 40 playable characters, each with their own unique abilities and fighting style.
By the way, the game also has co-op. You can play with friends and create a real bloodbath. The story recreates key arcs from the anime, so fans of the series will definitely love it. It’ll suck you in for hours.

Well, what can I say, friends, when I saw this game at the presentation, I knew right away: this is going to be something wild. It’s Goro Majima! And they made him a pirate. It’s just complete madness from the very beginning, because we get to play as one of the most insane characters in the gaming industry. We enter a world where the yakuza have somehow become pirates in the Pacific Ocean. The plot is, frankly, something else, but that’s exactly what pulls you in. Essentially, it’s a typical open-world game, but with a unique flavor and gameplay.
The gameplay, as you’d expect, is centered on exploration. We’ll dive into the atmosphere of sea adventures, sail the ocean, search for treasure, and, of course, fight. The combat system is just awesome, a classic slasher with insane combos and finishers, and you can also switch between “Mad Dog” and “Pirate” styles. This is, so to speak, the main feature of this game.

Of course, we’ll have our own ship, and the gameplay is a standard action-RPG, but with the sea and pirates.
The main feature of the game, to be honest, is the naval battles and, of course, exploration. The world here is seamless, you can hop on your ship and just sail wherever you want, then land on some island and clear a dungeon. The gameplay is all about finding new gear, leveling up your hero, unlocking new spells, and, of course, fighting the Pi-rats, who, among other things, are constantly getting in our way.
The project is a lot of fun. Worth a try.
Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game

More about the game: Read More
Let’s be honest, when we talk about LEGO games, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t the gameplay, but the atmosphere. And Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is no exception. This game is made for the whole family, as well as for fans of the iconic movie series. It has everything we love about these games – the signature humor, simple controls, co-op, and of course, our favorite characters, meaning Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, Davy Jones, and others.
The entire gameplay boils down to running around locations you’ll recognize from the movies, collecting studs, and solving simple puzzles. Of course, there are battles in the game, but they are strictly for show and present no challenge, and in general, there’s nothing here that would make a hardcore gamer even frown. But that’s not the point, as the main goal is to enjoy watching familiar scenes in a new comedic format. The game is perfect for chilling for a couple of evenings with a friend or a child.

The story transports us to a world where our hero, Guybrush Threepwood, never managed to solve the main secret of Monkey Island. Meanwhile, new pirate leaders have seized power, and old friends are in trouble.
The entire gameplay is built on solving tricky puzzles and interacting with characters. There’s a lot of humor in the game, so you won’t get bored. We’ll be exploring new locations, as well as old ones that have, by the way, changed a lot.
All in all, this game is a real gift for fans of the series. It’s strictly for fans. If you’re not familiar with the original, just walk on by and don’t look back.
Captain Blood

Release Date: 2025
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Genres: Action, Adventure, Pirates, Slasher, Sword Fighting, Third-Person, Deep Story, Seafaring
More about the game: Read More
Captain Blood is, essentially, the long-awaited revival of an old project, but for modern players. We get to take on the role of a fearsome buccaneer who sails the seas in search of gold and glory. The setting is the 17th century, where the Spanish Main is teeming with pirate adventures.
The gameplay is a dynamic slasher. Hand-to-hand combat with hordes of enemies is a frantic brawl. Lots of different combos and special moves. Our arsenal will be very impressive: sabers, pistols, muskets, and even hand grenades.
By the way, the game is made in a unique visual style that, so to speak, resembles a graphic novel. The character animations and the look of the gear are just awesome. This is a solid project that’s worth a try.
DAVY x JONES

Release Date: 2025
Platforms: PC
Genres: Action, Adventure, Pirates, Open World, First-Person Shooter, Sword Fighting, Atmospheric, Dark Fantasy, Deep Story
More about the game: Read More
To be honest, I’ve been sick of the pirate theme for a while now. I mean, how many times can we sail around the same tropical islands? DAVY x JONES is a breath of fresh air. The story takes us to the afterlife, where we play as the beheaded Davy Jones, and our partner is his own, so to speak, talking skull. Admit it, you’ve never seen anything like that. The game throws us into a world of floating islands inhabited by demons and sea monsters.
The gameplay is essentially a fast-paced first-person action game. At our disposal are sabers, pistols, and, of course, a boarding hook that can be used to pull enemies closer and swing around the levels. The combat system won’t let you get bored, with finishers and parries. For every enemy killed, we get unstable essences, which can be used to create loot chests, but there’s a catch – every time you open a chest, a new demon appears. This way, the developers push the player to constantly take risks.
We’ll have to take control of a living ship named Abby, half whale, half ship. She’s our base, artillery platform, and just a loyal friend. By the way, you can hire different officers on board to give us buffs or just improve stats. DAVY x JONES is a project that’s strictly for a niche audience, but if you’re looking for something unusual in the genre, you should definitely give it a try.
Online Pirate Games (MMO & MMORPG)
Pirates of the Burning Sea

Release Date: 2008
Platforms: PC
Genres: MMORPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, Adventure, Atmospheric, Ships, Historical
More about the game: Read More
Pirates of the Burning Sea is, essentially, one of the few MMORPGs about pirates. The game is set in the Caribbean in 1720, where three factions – England, France, and Spain – are fighting for influence, and of course, the pirates who couldn’t care less about all these lords and kings. We play as a captain who is free to choose their own path: you can become a merchant, level up your diplomacy, but in my opinion, it’s better to be a pirate. The entire gameplay revolves around exploring the open world and naval battles, which, by the way, are done excellently here.
Of course, a game with such rich endgame content and a huge world couldn’t help but become a cult classic. The community is alive and dedicated, which is rare for such an old game. There are both PvP battles for ports and PvE missions, so everyone will find something to do.
It’s a solid project, definitely worth a try.
Pirate Storm: Death or Glory

Release Date: 2012
Platforms: PC (browser game)
Genres: MMORPG, Pirates, Open World, Naval Combat, PvP, PvE, Ships, Atmospheric
More about the game: Read More
Pirate Storm: Death or Glory is a free-to-play browser-based MMORPG from Bigpoint that, back in its day, gathered a huge army of sea adventure fans. The player gets their own ship and sets off into the open sea, where battles with monsters, other pirates, and entire fleets await them.
Pirate Storm: Death or Glory is a classic browser-based MMORPG, essentially one of those good old games that would suck you in for hours. What we have here is a standard project from Bigpoint, where, as usual, we start with a small vessel and slowly progress. The player’s main goal is to upgrade their ship and hero, complete quests, and of course, participate in naval battles. We’ll have to sail vast expanses, divided into 36 maps, where both PvE battles with monsters and PvP with other players await us.
By the way, you can’t be a lone wolf here. To succeed and get access to the most interesting endgame content, you must join a clan. Then, guild wars and joint raids open up, and the loot there is amazing. To be honest, the game is old, but the community is still alive, so if you were looking for an old-school browser game about pirates – go for it.
A solid B-lister, nothing more.
Uncharted Waters Online

Release Date: 2004
Platforms: PC
Genres: MMORPG, Pirates, Open World, Ships, Naval Combat, Trading, Exploration, Atmospheric, Historical
More about the game: Read More
Uncharted Waters Online is a classic MMORPG that takes us to the Age of Discovery. Essentially, it’s a large virtual world where everyone can find something to do. We have to choose one of the six European powers and decide whether to become a merchant, an explorer, or a pirate. There’s no single main plot here; our task is simply to live in this world.
The gameplay is entirely focused on the sea. We can build new ships, customize them, hire a crew, and set off on long voyages. The naval battles here are a whole other story; they are tactical and require the player to be skilled with sails and cannons. By the way, the game world is simply huge, with dozens of cities and tons of places to explore.
Definitely a must-have for fans of the old school and for those who love naval romance.
Florensia

Release Date: 2008
Platforms: PC
Genres: MMORPG, Pirates, Fantasy, Anime, Open World, Ships, Naval Combat, PvP, PvE, Atmospheric
More about the game: Read More
Well, in my opinion, Florensia is one of those “you should have played it back then, now it’s too late” kind of games. This free-to-play MMORPG with an anime art style essentially offers a double grind – you have to level up both your character and your ship. Both are necessary to feel comfortable in this world. The game is set in a fantasy world where we explore the Hoomanil Ocean and a bunch of different islands.
By the way, if you don’t like the sea gameplay, there are also land battles. There’s PvE and PvP content, so there’s always something to do. But to be honest, this game is already outdated. The graphics are terrible, and the gameplay is generic and repetitive.
Walk on by and don’t look back.
Sea of Thieves

Release Date: 2018
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 5
Genres: Action, Adventure, Open World, Pirates, Naval Combat, Multiplayer, Co-op, Atmospheric, First-Person
More about the game: Read More
Honestly, Sea of Thieves is probably the only game that offers a complete immersion into the romance of piracy. We get to dive into an atmosphere of endless adventures, where every day is a new story. There’s no strong plot here; the main story, essentially, is you and your friends. We play as a captain who has to explore a seamless world, search for treasure, and fight.
The main feature of the game is that everything is based on cooperation. Your crew will have to raise the sails together, repair holes, and during a battle – one loads the cannons, another aims, and a third repairs the ship. This kind of gameplay is incredibly addictive and creates a ton of unforgettable moments.
Besides the standard pirate stuff, here you can fight a giant Kraken or a Megalodon, and a bunch of other sea monsters, so there’s plenty of PvE content too. If you’re looking for a genuinely cool pirate game, Sea of Thieves is what you need.
Crosswind

Release Date: 2026
Platforms: PC
Genres: Pirates, Survival, Open World, Naval Combat, Ships, Building, Crafting, Adventure, Action, Third-Person, Co-op, MMO
More about the game: Read More
So, what do we have here? Crosswind is basically an MMO about pirates and survival, where you not only have to rob ships but also make sure your character doesn’t die of hunger. The story takes us to the World of Sails, where we have to survive after a blatant betrayal. In short, as usual, we start from scratch, without a ship and without anything. Our task is to rebuild and get revenge.
The entire gameplay is built on crafting and resource gathering. You need to chop down trees, build a base, find food, and so on. Well, you get the idea. Besides that, of course, there are naval battles. Here we will have to command different ships and participate in cannon duels. This is, frankly, the juiciest part of the game. By the way, in the huge open world, there are not only other players but also bosses that drop some decent loot.
Of course, the game is primarily focused on co-op. You can play through the entire game with friends, which, in my opinion, really saves the situation, because it would be extremely difficult to survive here alone.
The game will suck you in for hours.
Skull and Bones

Release Date: 2024
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
Genres: Action, Action RPG, Pirates, Naval Combat, Open World, Multiplayer, Fleet, Crafting, First-Person, Third-Person
More about the game: Read More
Well, what can you say, Skull and Bones is a pirate game from Ubisoft, which in itself says a lot. Essentially, it’s naval combat on the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag engine, but without boarding actions and decent on-foot gameplay. We get to take control of a captain who dreams of becoming the most feared pirate in the Indian Ocean. The entire gameplay is based on crafting, progression, and, of course, naval battles.
The developers were clearly inspired by Black Flag, but apart from the beautiful graphics, they couldn’t come up with anything original. The world is large and seamless, but in reality, it feels empty and repetitive. However, the naval battles are top-notch – you can build different ships and load them up with all sorts of gear. There’s PvE with bosses and PvP with other players.
On top of all that, the game has a season system, dailies, and weeklies, as well as microtransactions that are annoying right from the start. If you’re a fan of Black Flag and want a similar game but online, then this is what you need. Otherwise, just pass on it.
Age of Water

Release Date: 2024
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
Genres: MMORPG, Action, Pirates, Open World, Post-Apocalyptic, Naval Combat, Crafting, Exploration, Third-Person
More about the game: Read More
Age of Water is an MMORPG that takes us to a post-apocalyptic world where all the land has been submerged. Now people live on the roofs of flooded skyscrapers, and the main means of transportation are ships. Basically, we have to take on the role of a captain who must survive in this harsh world. The main task is to build and upgrade your ship, gather resources, and also fight against other players or AI opponents.
Besides that, of course, there’s trading and quests, but for the most part, the entire gameplay is based on naval battles. By the way, the developers were clearly inspired by Sea of Thieves, because here too you can capture an enemy vessel. We also have to build our own naval base, where we can set up the production of weapons and parts.
To be honest, the game is strictly for a niche audience. The concept is interesting, of course, but like many MMORPGs, it doesn’t work 100%. I think it’s just another sandbox where you can get lost for a couple of hours and then forget about it.
A solid 3 out of 10, nothing more.
Blazing Sails

Release Date: 2020
Platform: PC
Genres: Action, Pirates, Naval Combat, Multiplayer, Co-op, Online Co-op, Fleet, First-Person Shooter, PVP, Open World
More about the game: Read More
To be honest, Blazing Sails is a multiplayer project that even an experienced player will find boring and repetitive. The game is a kind of pirate battle royale, where we have to fight with friends against other teams and, in the end, be the last surviving crew. There is also a “Conquest” mode where you need to capture islands, but it’s basically the same battle royale, just with different mechanics.
The main emphasis here, of course, is on teamwork. One player is at the helm, others are repairing holes, and someone is trying to hit the enemy with a cannon. The player’s arsenal includes several cannons and types of weapons, such as muskets, pistols, or the Sword of the Sea, which drains life. Of course, there is customization, where would we be without it. You can customize your hero or ship to make them look more unique.
Frankly, this is one of those cases where the game looks interesting only on paper, but in reality, it doesn’t work. It’s boring and repetitive, not even worth your time, even at a deep discount.

A gamer with over 20 years of experience, well-versed in a wide range of gaming genres and themes. I create detailed game lists and share my take on the best titles.
My favorite genres are strategy and RPG, where tactics, progression, and deep storytelling matter most. Favorite games include Civilization V, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, the Gothic series, the Mass Effect series, and Stronghold.
I write about games truly worth playing, helping players discover new gems.
